POORVA KARMA

SNEHANA
It’s also knownasOleation Therapy.It is atreatments that are done prior tostarting the Panchakarma treatment.InCharaka Samhita there are mainly4 types of snehana dravyathat are considered to be the most effective for snehan.
1) Ghee (ghrita)
2) Oil (taila)
3) Fat (vasa)
4.) BoneMarrow(majja)
DadimadiGhrita, Tila Taila and bala taila, as well as ashwagandhaGhrita and others are amongthedrugs usedinsnehana.
Themethod is used to lubricate the entirebodyby applying medicated oils/gheeinternally and externally.If the medicated oil/ghee isapplied internally, it is known asthe snehapanam. It’s animportant procedure for Panchakarma.
CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1.) Internal oleation
Itincludes consumption ofsnehana dravya in a medicatedornon-medicated version. Itcan or should notbemixedwith other ayurvedicmedications or food items.This method helps to lubricate thetissuesand different parts ofhuman body.
2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga
Itincludes head massage the body, massage,gargles and other treatments using medicated oils.
SWEDANA
It is also calledsteam therapyortherapeutic sudation. This isanother procedure that is performed prior toPanchakarma.It improvesblood circulation and removescontaminants through the pores of the skinand the body.

PRADHAN KARMA OR SHODHAN CHIKITSA
1) VAMANA
It is atreatment that is controlled to preventvomiting. Vamana therapyis a remedy forthe kapha doshas.When the dosha is overthe limit of a certain amount and getsmoved to other place then it needs tobeeliminatedcompletely from ourbody. INDICATIONS-
Thetreatment is appropriate fordiarrhea, dysentery, feverthat is recent in origin, cough, cold,thyroid disorder,urinary tractdisorders anorexia, skin disorders breathing disorder, ingestion,fibroid, goiter, filariasisetc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS-
Patientswho have kapha dosha that is belownormalshould not be treated withvammanatherapy.Women who are pregnant, not havingany snehana or karma, with a strong ag(digestive system) or someone who isunder stress, or hungry and children, elderly who is weak, weak, has an enlargedthe spleen, intestinal parasitesenlarged prostate and etcin these situations, vamana karmamust be avoided.
2) VIRECHAN
Virechan (purgation)is the 2nd karmainpanchakarma. It isone of the most widelyemployed therapies, with particular emphasis ondiseases caused due toaggravated pitta dosha. The pittadosha gets eliminatedin a forceful manner through the anal channel.Doshas are eliminated withless strain and with less complications whenthan vamana karma. Itcould also be administeredinvata-pitta or pitta-kaphadoshas where pitta dominates. Thetherapy requires the following of adiet regimens to achieve thenormaldiet , and then completethetreatment.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Depending on the medicine used,virechan may be of two kinds2 types
1.) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofSnigdha meansoily. It isused to describe pitta, whichisassociated withvata dosha.
2) Rooksha virechan- itcan be identified when pitta has beenconnected to kapha dosha.
INDICATIONS
Virechancan be givenconstipation, gout, piles, jaundice, liver disease and splenomegaly. Ascites,dysuria, pain in largecolon, urogenitalsystem infemales and males nasal bleeding, etc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
A poor digestive system, diarrhea and dysentery, ulcersin the rectum or emaciatedpatient, following excessiveoleation treatment, wounds etcareall instances in whichvirechanis not indicated.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inolden daystheurinarybladder (basti) wasutilized as anequipmentforenema.This is why the name of theprocess is basti karma.
Basti isone of the special treatmentsinayurvedic panchakarma.The medicated ghee,decoction, oil and other ingredientsare administeredthrough rectal,vaginal, and urinary route. Itboosts immunity and improvesthe overall health of an individual. Vatadosha causesall diseases,and basti karmacan be the treatmentof choice for pacifyingvata dosha.Therefore, it is describedas ‘ardhaChikitsa’ .
